Real Food for Pregnancy – Lily Nichols
There is no shortage of nutrition information out there. It is hard to know what to follow and what to ignore. Lily Nichols is a highly trusted source of mine. She does her research before she recommends anything. I read and referred to this book multiple times during my pregnancy. Any time a patient has a nutrition question I love to send them here. She goes into detail on macro and micronutrients. She also has a great meal plan and recipes. She covers conditions like anemia, pre-eclampsia, headaches and more.
The Mama Natural Week by Week Guide to a Pregnancy and Childbirth – Genevieve Howland
I love the layout of this book. It was so exciting to read along each week of my pregnancy. More often than not I found myself reading ahead. She discusses what to expect with your body and what baby is doing each week. She also covers important topics and when to be thinking about them. She has a very natural approach to pregnancy but this book is helpful for any type of birth you are planning.
Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth – Ina May Gaskin
Ina May is the GOAT of natural childbirth and homebirth. She served as a midwife for decades. She even created a place for women to travel to give birth in a home birth setting. She has seen countless babies be born. This book is highly recommended for those planning a home birth. I believe it would be helpful for all women to read this however. She covers the true physiologic process of birth. I think this is vital to understand before having a baby.
The Vaccine Friendly Plan – Jennifer Margulis and Paul Thomas
I only discovered this book after having my son. But I think this is something all pregnant moms should read BEFORE having a baby. It’s written by a pediatrician. He discusses the risks versus benefits of each vaccine from pregnancy all the way through adulthood. This is so important during pregnancy because if you are using an OB they will likely recommend the TDAP and Flu vaccines. I urge you to do your own research and make the best decision for you. This is a great place to start.
