The Connection Between Chiropractic Care and Optimal Fetal Positioning

When I am adjusting a pregnant mom, I am looking specifically at the sacrum. Your sacrum can twist to the right or the left. When that happens, you will lose your range of motion, as well as experience increased muscle tension, inflammation and pressure. This might cause low back discomfort that you experience during pregnancy.

When your sacrum twists, it actually changes the shape of your pelvic outlet. This shift can make your pelvic outlet more oval and oblong, instead of round and open. Not only does this cause discomfort, but when it’s time for birth, your baby might get stuck or stalled as he or she tries to move into the birth canal. One of the first things I will do is adjust the sacrum from the rotated position into the neutral position.

Additionally, your uterus is directly connected to your sacrum. If the sacrum twists at all, it can cause torque in how your uterus sits. This affects the space that your baby has inside your uterus. After I adjust the sacrum, I come forward to the round ligaments that connect the front side of your uterus to your pubic bone. Often, the round ligament that is the opposite side that your sacrum was tilted will be tighter to bring balance and stability to your body. For instance, if I adjusted the left side of your sacrum, I would then adjust your right round ligament.

These two adjustments bring balance to your body, as well as give your baby plenty of room to be in your uterus. By creating space through sacrum and ligament adjustments, your baby can shift, turn or flip, and easily move into the ideal position for labor.

It’s important to note that sacrum adjustments can help ease low back discomfort, inflammation, pressure, and more as your body grows with your baby. Each week, your body is changing. My goal is to help you have a pain-less pregnancy. You don’t need to just get adjusted in the final weeks of your pregnancy journey, it’s beneficial throughout your entire pregnancy! I encourage you to find a Webster certified chiropractor, regardless if you are 8 weeks or 38 weeks.
